Boy Scouts of America Lift Ban on Openly Gay Scouts
Scouting is a rite of passage for many American youth, but until now, openly gay boys were prohibited from participating in the century-old Boy Scouts of America (BSA) organization. In a controversial vote on Thursday, the group's National Council approved a resolution to lift the ban on granting membership to homosexual youth, though the ban on openly gay adult leaders remains in effect. The new policy will become effective on January 1, 2014. Supporters of gay rights are applauding the move, but not everyone is pleased. Some individuals have resolved to sever their ties with the organization, and it is possible that some faith-based organizations will do the same. Discuss
